One of the more popular pages on the site is the postcodes in the City of London administrative area. This confused me for a while since the City of London is a small area that is important for financial services but not much else. I came to the conclusion that it was based on people trying to find a list of all London postcodes so I added a link to a more comprehensive page of London postcodes. But then I wondered if that was really what people would want from a list of London postcodes and where in fact London ends. So here's a brief description of what the options are.

The City of London administrative area does closely line up with what was considered London several hundred years ago. It's now more commonly known as the Square Mile and as you'd guess from the name, it's tiny. It's the smallest black area in the map above

This list of London postcodes is a list of postcodes that are considered to be in the London post town and consists of the E, EC, N, NW, SE, SW, W and WC postcode areas. I guess when those postcode areas were created, that may have been considered the extent of London, but I don't think anyone would think that now, Wembley Stadium and Heathrow Airport are both outside it. It's the red area in the map.

The larger black area above is the area covered by the Greater London Authority, which is probably what most people would consider as London these days. You can download data for this area here

But even that may not be enough. Maybe you think anything inside the M25 is London. Certainly London's urban sprawl now extends beyond the boundary of the GLA. I don't currently have data for this but it's on my To Do list. It's the blue area above.

But the urban sprawl extends beyond the M25 in places, so maybe that doesn't really define the boundary. What about the area where people mostly work in London? The London Travel to Work Area data is here and is shown above as the blue shaded area. That gives a completely different area than the others, with a big chunk taken out of the Western side by areas where people work in Slough and Heathrow, rather than London.

So to answer the original question, where does London end? It's not really clear. Sorry I've not been more helpful, but maybe it will help you decide which specific London data you should download

The latest data from the Land Registry is now available on the site. The annual change in prices is still negative but looks to be heading back to positive territory. Sales are still in the doldrums

A little late but I've just uploaded the latest postcode data to the site. The biggest change is that new built up areas (from 2024) are included in the data. 

I've run my usual sanity checks and not found any issues, but let me know if you find anything amiss

I've uploaded the latest house price data for England and Wales to the website. I've also added a map showing the average prices in the different postcode areas, which unsurprisingly highlights that London and the South East are the most expensive parts of the country

If you're a fan of British train stations (and who isn't?) then you'll be excited to learn I've uploaded the latest station usage data to the site. Liverpool Street in London retains its position as the busiest station, thanks to the extra traffic from the Elizabeth line. Overall usage still hasn't quite reached pre-Covid levels, presumably due to WFH becoming a bigger part of people's lives.

The latest house price data has landed and has been uploaded to the site. Little has changed, prices continue to fall, sales volumes are still low. 

I've nearly finished uploading the latest house price data for England and Wales to the website. Prices continue to fall and sales volumes still look very low. The falls are affecting pretty much all areas, but a special shoutout to my hometown, what is happening in Blackburn?

I've started to include road names in the UK postcode CSV downloads. Let me know if you spot any problems or if you want them included in any other downloads

I've uploaded the latest ONS postcode data to the site. There have been some changes to the data provided. Built up areas have been updated to the latest 2022 areas and built up area sub-divisions no longer exist. Constituency boundaries are now from the 2024 election. This means the layout of the CSV files has changed and there will be more changes as I clean up any other references to the old data.

I'm in the process of uploading the latest Land Registry data to the site. Prices continue to fall although it appears the rate of falls has reached a plateau. Sales volumes still seem anaemic. I'm guessing the recent interest rate reduction will start to have an impact in the months ahead

I've updated the Multiple Postcodes page so you can now use it to get a list of all the streets that are covered by the selected postcode areas. You can grab the data as CSV or KML. Any suggestions or problems, let me know

I'm currently importing the latest house price data from the Land Registry to the website. Prices seem to be flat-lining although the annual change is still negative. Sales volumes are still low with no sign of turning round. I guess lower interest rates may start having an effect in the coming months.

I'm currently uploading the latest data from the Land Registry to the website. Prices continue to fall on the annual measure although it looks like they may be starting to move back to positive territory. There seems to be no end in site to the fall in the number of sales.

There have been a number of minor tweaks on the site recently that may be of interest.

• I've made some changes to how the link between UPRN and road name is calculated, which hopefully produces more accurate results
• I've added a Property Type field to postcode downloads, that contains the most common type of property in the postcode. This field is populated based on property sales so it may not be entirely accurate
• the segment explorer lets you filter segments by the speed of the KOM/QOM
• The JSON version of the GetPostcode API now includes a whole lot more data

I'm uploading the latest Land Registry data to the site. We've now had price falls for 6 months, although it looks like the falls may have slowed or stopped. The number of sales continues to look grim. The lowest annual sales ever was in the year to June 2009 and it looks like we may go below that, although it is difficult to know for certain since it can take quite some time for all the data to get to the Land Registry

To celebrate the upcoming election and because I've had a few requests for them, I've added data for new constituencies to the site. The pages are a little sparse at the moment but if all you require is CSV data for a constituency, you should be good to go.

On a regional level, prices have fallen pretty much everywhere.

I've uploaded the latest house price data from the Land Registry to the website. Prices continue to slide. If they fall again next month, it will be the longest period of sustained falls since 2012. Sales are trickier to evaluate since it can take some time for all the data to come in but they still look on the low side.

I've imported the latest postcode data from the ONS to the website. I had some issues with parishes, the postcodes reference new parish codes but the parish name lookups still use the old codes, so I've had to manually fix up the data, which I may well have messed up. If you notice any issues with parishes or anywhere else in the postcode data, let me know

The website is churning through the latest data from the Land Registry and the top line numbers are now online. Sales volumes still look low and the the fall in prices continues. Maybe there'll be another Stamp Duty holiday to turn the numbers around in time for an election.

I've also recently updated the average income data by MSOA area. The data is released rather slowly by the ONS, so we are only now able to get it for 2020. Perhaps unsurprisingly, pretty much all the areas with the highest incomes are in London and the South East of England. I could highlight some of the areas at the top of the list, but the confidence intervals are so large I suspect this may not be that informative. If you want to see the original data, you can download it directly from the ONS.

I've updated the site to include details of another level of administrative area, county electoral divisions. For example - Cambridgeshire postcodes

I've added usage data for GB stations for the April 2022 to March 2023 time period. Whilst most stations still haven't returned to their pre-pandemic usage, the Elizabeth line appears to have been a huge success, with many of the stations along it achieving record numbers of passengers. The most used station is no longer London Waterloo, which has held the record for every year apart from 2021, but rather London Liverpool Street.

I've uploaded the latest ONS postcode data. There is an issue with ITL codes in the Northamptonshire area which I can't currently resolve but I will keep an eye out for updated data from the ONS. If you see any other problems, let me know

The server is currently churning through the latest house price data from the Land Registry. The trend continues, the number of sales is falling and prices are dropping with the annual percentage change likely to turn negative next month. The rise in interest rates finally seems to be having an effect.

I've updated the Land Registry data on the website. The annual change is still in positive territory but prices look to be starting to head downwards. Taking into account inflation and wage increases, house prices are falling, but given the increases in mortgage costs, affordability is probably not

Another month goes by and the world may be on fire but house prices keep going up

Based on some useful feedback some time ago (thanks Denis!), I've added a new feature to the segment explorer to help you grab more KOMs or QOMs. You can now view and filter on the upcoming wind direction for the area you are viewing. I don't really chase KOMs these days (too old and slow) so I can't vouch for its usefulness, but I think it could be quite useful for those that do
